How to preserve family photos and the memories behind them

3 October 2026 · The Banyan team

A family photograph becomes more useful when someone records who is in it and what they remember. Start with a few pictures your relatives recognize. In Banyan, connect a photo and its context to the right person's profile so future relatives have a place to begin.

Choose a small set of photographs

Begin with a familiar portrait, an older photograph, or a gathering that someone can explain. Keep your original files in a place your family controls. A profile photo is useful for recognition, but it is not a replacement for keeping the original photograph and your own backup.

Ask the people who recognize the faces

Record the names people used, the relationships, and the place or occasion when it is known. Ask open questions: Who else was there? What do you remember about this person? Which detail would a younger relative need explained?

Separate a confirmed fact from a guess. If the date or identity is uncertain, say so in the notes or leave the field blank. A relative can help correct the record later.

Connect the memory to a person

Find the existing relative in Banyan before adding a new profile. Add a recognizable photo and short notes with the context your family supplied. Follow the relationships to see how that person connects to another generation.

A few specific sentences are more useful than a long, unexplained collection: the nickname everyone used, the place they lived, or a story the family remembers. Ask permission before sharing sensitive details, and leave out information someone does not want the family to record.

Keep the work shared and private

Invite relatives to the same private tree so they can contribute with their family permissions. One person might know the names while another has the photos. Check differences together instead of treating the first account as final.

Banyan's public guides explain the product; your actual family profiles and photos stay within your tree's membership. Read the privacy policy and family questions and answers for more detail.

Return while the memory is fresh

After a gathering, add one remembered detail before it fades. Use the family calendar as a reason to return for birthdays and events. The aim is a family record that people can keep improving, one checked contribution at a time.

One tree, many roots.
